Marx was, like most 19th century philosophers a Lamarckist with a belief that evolution led inevitably to an optimisation. In his case it involved a series of human societal evolutions culminating in a withering away of the state and the achievment of true communism.
Lamarckism was adopted by later 'adherents' to Marx to hideous effect. Stalin was a Lamarckist, influenced this guy.
