They were Scytians and the Slavs adopted their script and culture, no the other way around. They also stopped an Arab invasion of Europe so they were just as important as the Franks.

The Arabs were busy starving to death and the Byzs were constantly raiding their supply lines, the bulgars just delivered the mercy kill, the only reason the Bulgars attacked was because the starving Arab troops started foraging in Bulgar lands.
>>

Bulgars were named Bolgar, a Turkic "boy". Like Oghuz (Turkish) or Cuman (Tatar) turkics.

They got assimilated into Slavic culture.

Which is a shame, they were bad asses when they were turkic militaristic, fucking up Byzantines left and right.
>>
Medieval bulgar history is pretty complex.

Old great Bulgaria was a confederation in modern-day Ukraine, and their origin is uknown. A highly probable theory was that the Dulo clan(the ruling elite of these tribes) were part of the original Hunnic federation. The early rulers of Bulgar settled kingdoms claimed direct descent from Atilla.

Anyway from this confederation, the royal warrior elite split into several groups, the two primary settling in the balkans and uniting with local slavic tribes, and the other in the volga region.

The balkan-danube bulgars were never a majority, they were a ruling dynastic military elite who somehow came to rule the slavs and gradually adopted Byzantine culture primarily. They converted to Christianity, and actually there was a long struggle between Rome and Constantinople to get them in their respective spheres of religious influence.

Volga Bulgaria converted to islam and was a wealthy and successful kingdom on the silk road, but it's unfortunate location, it was constantly raided by Rus principalities, and then completely BTFO by mongols. They were the predecessors to modern Kazan Tatars and Chuvash people.
>>
>>3224041
false
>>3224366
true

due to ottoman subjugation bulgarians dismiss any suggestion that their elite were turkic nomads who got SLAVED and assimilated later on, there are also attempts to portray the nomads as iranic rather than turkic.
I don't know which one is true, but I know some `persian` words which are deffinetly loaned after ottoman occupation around 1500s and not before to be used as evidence for `iranic` origin, which is bad sport.

Again ottoman subjugation is a big issue for bulgarians and you will meet with hostility if you imply that, in return I also met turks who claim they are %100 turkic etc.

To me they are a slavic people who were briefly ruled by nomads, probably of altaic origin but the elite adopted the culture of the masses rather than the other way around. Only the name stuck. IIrc the elite were tengriist beore converting to orthodoxy,
>>
>>3224020
Their ancestors lived in the Balkans since forever, they just ended up adopting Slavic language, Byzantine culture and are named after a bunch of Turks.
>>
>>3224366
By the late middle ages, The Second Bulgarian Empire was pretty different. The rulers were pretty much 100% slavicized, but there were more players in the region as well, undermining the balance. The second Tzardom was sort of a united kingdom of Bulgaria and Wallachia. The nobility was way more mixed, there was some cuman queens for example. Some part-serb blood, even byzantine inter marriages.

They still had some pretty glorious moments. For example, they competely BTFO the latins and captured their emperor.

Actually one of the worst(the worst?) and most humiliating defeats a crusader army suffered
>>
>>3224414
Their role in the fall of the Latin empire is downplayed. They killed a Latin emperor, mortally wounded the next and exterminated all of the original leaders of the crusade.

Not only that, but their contribution to the decline of eastern Romans is also really underrated. Everyone is about muh arabs, persians, ottomans, but Bulgarians constantly fucking pushed the northern borders and not one time they also pressured Constantinople. They actually exhausted Byzantines so much from centuries of warfare. For example Basil II, a capable general and a great emperor pretty much dedicated his entire life to putting down the fuckers, when he could have been expanding on other horizons.

It is highly unlikely, 99% bordering impossible that you met Bulgars. Bulgars are the original people with that name which settled in these lands. We are Bulgarians - a fucking genetic cocktail of ethnicity and cultures. Mostly in order of genetic dominance Thracian, then Slavic, Bulgar, Byzantine Greek, Ottoman and even small amounts of Celtic and Gothic DNA. But hey, it's what makes us who we are. Nationalism is so 1800s anyway. I speak the language, I live in the country that makes me a Bulgarian everything else is just a waste of words. Also less than 10% of the Bulgarians have blue eyes.

In fact if you see any blonde or fair Turks, you can pretty much guarantee it came from a Bulgarian when they took our superior women during their occupation. Nonetheless, there are a fair amount of Bulgarians with very dark complexions. I figure my blood is firmly Slavic whereas the darker Bulgarians are Bulgar, Turk, etc
>>
>>3225268
> LARPing as orthodoxes

One of the most retarded statements i've ever read.
Bulgars(yes the original turkic ones) are the ones who first christianised south slavs, and they were the center of medieval orthodoxy at some point.

>>3225476
The turkish ethnicity in Bulgaria(around 7-8% by the way) is all from ottoman times and has zero chronological relation to original bulgars,
>>
>>3224066
>pre bulgar Slavs
were the "seven slavic tribes"

>Were they related to the other balkan Slavs like Croats and Serbs?
no. croats and serbs were the last slavs that came from the north and settled the region, there were slavic tribes that settled the balkans before them.
>>
>>3224419
During Byzantine times at one point they killed the emperor, lamed the next one, and killed all the aristocracy, in the same battle, and then took multiple big cities in its aftermath.
But over time they became Byzantine themselves, slippers and silks and all. Leathery nomad warrior kings come in, get fat and drunk, and decline. You've watched that movie before.

Also post-Ottoman Bulgarians probably have nothing to do with early Bulgarians. All of the "traditional" Bulgarian kitchen includes New World food, all of their traditional dances and songs are Greek or Turkish, etc. The original people are lost completely.
>>
>>3225008
>A lot of pagan traditions carried to the christianized Slavs later though.

Such as? Jumping over fire and wearing a red band? Those are early christian cult things.
>>

>The Thracians are the most numerous people in the world, excepting the Indians.

t. Herodotus

So where did these very numerous people go? They walked into the sea or something?
How come nomadic people crossed the Danube and instantly were welcomed and supported by the locals, instead of resisted?
How come nomadic people started building castles a decade after settling?
How come nomadic people could produce iron armor for themselves AND their horses?

Bulgarian is a new name used to refer to the Thracians after some sort of confederation was created. Maybe there was a foreign elite in charge, but the people sure as fuck weren't outsiders, the complete lack of rebellions against them should confirm that.

The paleoanthropological material from all sites in Volga region, Ukraine and Moldova attributed to the Bulgars testify complex ethno-cultural processes.[211] The material shows the assimilation between the local population and the migrating newcomers.[203] In all sites can be traced the anthropological type found in the Zlivka necropolis near the village of Ilichevki, the district of Donetsk, of brachiocranic Caucasoid with small East Asian admixtures but with Bulgar males being more Mongoloid than females.[212][203][211] Despite the morphological proximity, there is a visible impact of the local population, in the Volga region of Finno-Ugric and ancient Turkic, in Ukraine of Sarmatian-Alans, and in Moldova of Slavic people.[211] The comparative analysis showed large morphological proximity between the medieval and modern population of the Volga region.[211] The examined graves in Northern Bulgaria and Southern Romania showed different somatic types, including Caucasoid-Mediterranean and less often East Asian.[166]

>So where did these very numerous people go

You fail to account that the balkans went through a shit load of mass murder, migration disease. At some points 70-80% of the population died to plagues. Romans were importing all sorts of people from wherever they can find to populate the region originally.
>instantly were welcomed and supported by the locals, instead of resisted?
False. They conquered and raided, like it was the fucking norm back then. Slavic tribes in the beginning were not a war-like people at all, they simply subjugated them and they sort of let themselves be ruled.
>started building castles
byzantine influence.

Actually every relevant ruler in the medieval Bulgar state utilized greek scholars, engineers, architects etc.
>>

Listen here kids, clan Dulo descents from the Hunnic confederation and Attila himself. That clan decides to migrate to the Balkans because of too much multiculturalism and then find the Thracians which they find suitable enough to mix with, they united and start wrecking some Byzantine shit. Later on some wild goatfuckers out of nowhere appear while our kings are squabbling over who should be king and conquer us. 500 years later we're back and start wrecking shit again only to be stopped by the dirty backstabbers that are our neighbors. Fast forward we get occupied unjustly by the ungrateful Soviet shits and they fuck up our country even more. The strategy employed by, for example, Krum, does not suggest he had a greek strategos advising him.
He sacked his capital and treasury, gathered an army of everyone (including elderly and women) and got around a mountain chain to move behind the greek army that was going home packed with loot, build a wall in a narrow passage, set it on fire, and fight there.

Greeks fought differently, moving along the coast or rivers, shipping supplies so they don't have to carry them, only having aristocracy and soldiers in the army, without many camp followers, etc.

Correct. Greeks utilized hugging coasts very well, which was annoying as fuck.

>>
>>3228788
>Bulgarian specialty was always ambushes, hit and runs, retreats etc.

Yes, which is very un-greek, so we know that they didn't utilize greek strategos.
They also had to hire mercenary navies, so we know they didn't utilize greek sailors or builders.
They also had to rent a siege park, so they didn't utilize greek engineers.
And they specifically developed their own alphabet and pushed their language and church around, so who the fuck did they hire from the greeks?

The original claim was they had a lot of greek specialists, but I can't see the greek influence, other than the bulgarian king imitating the more prestigious greek king.

>>
