Since 1974 is well outside the 25 year rule, can we have a thread about the history of RPGs and role playing in general?
My question is: while D&D was the first to popularize role playing with dice and paper, are there any instances further back in history of people roleplaying or engaging in a similar game?

How broad do define the term: role playing? Chess was used to simulate battle for aspiring generals. Monopoly gave users the role of corporate tycoons in order to teach the woes of capitalism.
