The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire by Edward Gibbon is really excellent. Despite the name it actually starts at the founding of the Empire, rather than its decline. But it wont tell you anything about the republic era.

He's a bit dry and rushes through things quite a bit, but it's a good entry into Roman History I think.
I did lose interest between Elagabulus and Domitian, then quit after Constantine, but maybe that was just me being fatigued rather than Mike's style.

Really begins with Commodus in earnest, but the intro from Augustus on is pretty long.

Mike Duncan, podcast is called The History Of Rome.
Also, try to read some Livy and Polybius if you want literature. Plutarchs Lives are also top notch, as are both of Caesars commentaries (Conquest of Gaul, The Civil War)
