They didn't?
Manchuria had some sort of weird status as still being Chinese territory under Russian Hegemony, who were building railroads all over the place.
The formal acquisition by Russia of Qing territory was Vladivostok.

Longstanding Russian interest in the Amur region, plus opportunism following China's weakness around the same time of the Opium War. That's just me speaking in ignorance from the Wikipedia page though. If anyone has details beyond wiki, I'd love to know more.

The treaty of Aigun gave co-dominium over large parts of the Amur region (maybe not "Manchuria" proper), but they got full posession of it just a few years later, and got the maritime region at the Conference of Beijing in 1860.

A major part of the justification for getting the Qing to cede the trans-Amur regions of Manchuria was that there really was no sign of Qing administration out there. The Qing claimed the land was theirs, but they never extended their influence out that far, and in many cases, nobody was even living out there.

Russia wanted to colonize Amur region already in 17th century, but was stopped by Qing dynasty which just finished the conquest of China.
Qinq dynasty built Willow Palisade which separated Manchuria except Liaodong from China, Han people were forbidden to settle in the North.
So the North became low populated and China didn't have proper control over it.
When Russians noticed it they pressured China to cede northern bank Amur and eastern bank of Ussuri. It was in 1860.
After this Qing dynasty had understood their mistake and migration prohibition was cancelled.
In 1895 after Japan-Chinese war China agreed to cede Liaodong Peninsula to Japan, but this was not allowed by Russia, France and Germany.
Russia promised protection from Japan and for this was allowed to build railroad through Manchuria to Vladivostok.
In 1898 Russia leased Port Arthur from China for 25 years.
