They were Slavs, Germans, Jews and Romanians themselves who assimilated into the Magyar language group. Also, Hungarians are not Huns, they're Magyars.

I know that sounds weird but the name for Hungary is Magyarország in Hungarian while the Hungarian language is called Magyar in Hungary.

After the Kuruc rebellion the Habsburg Empire wanted to abolish Hungary completely, colonize it with Germans and eliminate the Hungarians altogether as a people, but many Hungarians, especially nobles, the Labancok fought for them and sucked up to the Habsburg and managed to convince them that Hunagrians would still be useful to them.

Same in 1848-49, reactionary Hungarians nobles LARPing as "liberal" revolutionaries managed to get support from revolutionaries across Europe for their nationalist rebellion against Austria and the other nations.
Less than two decades latter, in 1867, trough negotiations they managed to get Austria to give them independence in internal affairs and all their territorial claim on a silver platter, while Croats and Romanians who had been loyal to the Crowns, got nothing.
