What were the cultural implications of arianism? I might just be dense, but I can't see how a theological controversy like that affects culture.

Standard Christian morality is highly focused on glorifying victim-hood and suffering. This is due to the idea that God himself was victimized and that it was the most important event in human history (death of god pays for the sins of man and all that)
Arianism takes the image of the suffering martyr Jesus and explicitly tells us that is not God but a type of vessel.
If the Lord created Jesus, and then Jesus the created object dies to redeem all of humanity and joins his father in heaven, Christianity ceases to be monotheistic.
