Adding to that, the people in denial about it all probably don't think it's a defeat because our forces weren't necessarily driven out of Vietnam, but rather the war was pointless to continue and extremely unpopular back home so the US went through the process of slowly returning troops home. The misconception goes the other way, with people using the loss as a way to disparage America's armed forces despite the loss having no bearing on the efficacy of the American military. At best you can only claim American strategy going into the war was fundamentally flawed, which is entirely the fault of Congress. The mandate was that the armed forces were not allowed to invade North Korea, and all offensive operations were heavily curtailed. This forced America into a permanent defensive position regardless of their overwhelming strength and their victory condition was then entirely dependent on propping up a beleaguered puppet state in the south.

America won every battle, never gave up an acre of south Vietnamese soil, and did as much damage as they could possible do while being constrained in fighting only a defensive (read: losing) war. And then the mandate came down that they were to leave, and then Congress cut funding to South Vietnam's government and they were overrun, making it a total loss.
