Let's talk about it

Should've let the Soviets have it.

At the time, the Eternal Kebab seemed like the lesser evil compared to the Eternal Bolshevik. Sadly, we were wrong.

A lot of aircraft have classified materials/parts such as computers that are critical to operating the aircraft but you don't want falling into outside hands.

With more common vehicles like tanks, there's not enough customers to buy all of them. An African dictator might just buy the immediately serviceable ones and not bother with the ones that would require extensive repairs.

>>
>>3200859

When the F-14 Tomcat was retired from service, the US Navy ordered the overwhelming majority of aircraft to be immediately destroyed rather than put into storage or resold abroad out of concerns that Iran (the only other user of the F-14) might obtain and cannibalize them to service their own aircraft. Only a handful of airframes were saved to be put on display and only after they were stripped of the components that made them airworthy.
>>
>>3200897
That's some weapons grade fucking autism.
How many fighter jest does Iran even have in service? 20? How many does US have? 5,000?

712 F-14s were built between 1969 and 1991, of which 79 were sold to Iran (it was supposed to be 80 but the last plane was withheld because of the fall of the Shah). 19-44 of them are estimated to be still in service (quite impressive considering their age and the fact the Iranians only bought 10 years worth of replacement parts).

Ironically enough, the F-14 showed its true combat potential in Iranian service rather than American. 160 air-to-air kills.
>>
>>3200811
>>3200855
Shouldn't these just me salvaged? That's a lot of fucking steel!
>>
>>3201926
The steel is the least valuable thing on those planes. Computers, wiring, engines, and other pieces of technology are not only top secret but extremely expensive.

It displaced my dad, he was belonged to a semi-aristocratic family though and managed to leave two weeks before the 40th army's invasion on Christmas day. Besides leaving everything they owned behind they were safe.

I know a bunch about what life was like in Afghanistan from April 1978 (Afghan communist party takeover AKA Saur Revolution) to December 1979 (Russian invasion), so fire away with questions

What do u wanna know? Because they were wealthy they had a code word when skipping curfew to not get shot (it was: the people's party) and the freedom fighters had nightly radio broadcasts my dad always tuned into despite the major risks. His classmates would occasionally get dragged off and killed and (being upper class) he was always pressured to join communist meetings, sometimes at knifepoint. Lots more but it was horrible compared to the mostly secular Afghanistan he had lived in the other 14 years of his life.

The kebabs are useless puppets, they didn't become a problem until the West started giving a platform to the marxists who started using racial divide politics which resulted in this new machine we have today of blowing up the middle east in order to import brown men.

And yet it's America that's the infamously casualty averse country. Where does the meme come from exactly?

I'm Russian so I guess I'll share our perspective on it.
>Brezhnev decided that current leader of Afghanistan isn't friendly and obedient enough, for being a Soviet neighbour
>Gets a new guy in power - who, while being a lot more obedient is also fucking retarded
>Starts cracking down on Islam in a country that's mostly Muslim
>unsurprisingly tribal communities rebel
>The new Afghan leader, being a bitch that he is can't fight the rebellion, so he runs to daddy Brezhnev and calls for help
>Soviet army enters Afghanistan to serve as peacekeeping forces, the whole thing is portrayed as internationalist duty (that's part is still in the veteran's titles)
>suddenly discovers that an army designed to smash through the combines NATO focrces isn't best suited for peacekeeping missions in heavily mountainous areas, where finesse and precision are required
>the only difference between a peaceful afghani shepard and an Islamist rebel is that the islamist has his AK pointed at you, while the shepard has it hidden somewhere
>Also CIA is giving them guns, singers and is importing more Islamists from Pakistan, setting up training camps there
>Soviet army slowly gets better at fighting the guerillas, realise the importance of elite forces like VDV and Spetsnaz, the rebels are contained but whenever Soviet army leaves an area they reappear again - the local government still can't do shit
>Brezhnev finally dies, the new guy is Gorbachev, full of hope, but lacking in competence
>pulls the army out of Afghanistan, it's incompetent government falling over soon after
>Afghan heroin starts flowing into USSR in unholy amounts, as it still does - we did have a border with them after all
The only good thing about the whole ordeal was that we got some training in dealing with sneaky rebels before the whole Chechnya thing started.
>>
>>3216532
Apples and oranges.

War in Afganistan was pure COIN.
>>
>>3216532

The Soviets hadn't fought a major war in nearly forty years by that point so it came as a shock to them. America on the other hand had at least one major military operation that required mobilization of tens of thousands of troops for every decade of the Cold War.
