The founding of the early Christian church is pretty well documented, especially now. As is the founding of Islam. Both of these religions are huge today. This also makes no sense.

To answer OP though, I would guess it has to do with the historical individualism people in America developed in regards to religion. Being a country that had no history with the Catholic Church and instead had roots in Protestantism - where individual interpretation of strictures is considered more valid - probably has something to do with this.

yes but in the USA you had the separation of church and state which allowed for several religious denominations to prosper. Compare that to Europe where the Church would regularly bed the state and any attack of the state also meant you also had to attack the church. Spanish communists didn't attack the catholic clergy for nothing.
