I'm a Custer and I have blood relation to him, I've never actually bothered learning much about him though. Only brought it up when the occasional history teacher asked back in school. Dad left when I was a kid so didn't have an interest in learning about that side of the family.

Pretty good cavalry commander, but too concerned with publicity for his own good. Many people like to point at his defeat at Little Bighorn as a sign of how he was unfit to be an officer, but he had no reason to believe that the his opponents wouldn't just retreat as they had every other time he faced them. Many would say that his actions at Gettysburg won the battle, and in some ways that's true. The fact that he was able to beat the legendary JEB Stuart on the 3rd day is no small feat.

He assumed that the same old trick he had used twice before would work: Swing around behind the warriors and capture a bunch of women and children to hold hostage so the warriors would go back to the reservation.

He probably didn't count on:

(1) Hard to cross the river to get at the women and children and getting bogged down.

(2) Not all the warriors would rush toward the diversion Reno was making at one end of the camp.
