I'm not even sure continuing the liberalization of Russia would have even helped in the short term. Socialists still would have terrorized much like they did against Alexander II and a revolution would still have been inevitable, but I do think long-term the idea of a democratic Russia would have taken root leading to less corruption/authoritarianism after the USSR fell and the Russian Federation emerged
