I was at a book launch a few weeks ago for a work focusing on the life of Hugh O'Neill, and a colleague of mine told me a story about how this guy in her class had turned in a paper proclaiming pre-modern Ireland to be a socialist, matriarchal paradise and that English encroachment on our political institutions was a patriarchal act. I've noticed this in my classes too, and it's kind of disconcerting. Irish language activism and the study of medieval Ireland seem to be breeding a lot of far-left loonies, I'm assuming as some kind of reactionary response to parochial working class Irish people who are sometimes ignorant of history in a far less active and dangerous way, having the good sense to stop at "oh I've no interest in any of that auld nonsense, sure why would I need to know that".
