Christianity is on its way out in the west. And at least in America Islam isn't keeping up the pace to fill that whole. I thought that this would lead to most of society being atheist in the garden variety reddit style atheist (but with less flagrant autism).
Then I came across this article in the NY times
and saw some things in my personal life that got me questioning. The TLDR of the article is that those not going to church are more likely to believe in ghosts, aliens, and a lot of new age shit is filling in the gap. I've seen a lot of this sort of shit go around my campus as well. I knew college would have a few hippies into weird shit but its more popular with seemingly normal people than I anticipated.
I'm wondering if society is going pagan. Not in the traditional way maybe, but in a modern and individualistic way

Society has true freedom of religion in most places in the west so people that do not agree with the Christian narrative are not forced to follow it regardless
