>>Thought Christopher Columbus sailed to prove the Earth was round
wait that's not true? I thought it was part of the reason why he did it other than to find a new way to India
>>
>>3189798
Why would he need to prove it? Why would some random merchant want to prove that? Columbus didn't even circumnavigate the globe.
>>
>>3189798
It was well known, at least among educated people, that the Earth was round by that time. They actually had a good idea of how large it was, too, thanks to mathematics. That was why no one wanted to give Columbus funding, because they thought he'd never make the long trip across the ocean from Europe to Asia, not realizing there was an American continent in-between.

The only reason Columbus himself thought it was possible is because he thought the world was actually pear shaped, and so smaller in the northern half than in the southern.
>>
>>3189798
Every educated person in 1492 knew it was round. Columbus' theory was that it was *smaller* than the conventional wisdom said it was, and that therefore he could plausibly reach the Far East sailing West. Everyone else thought this was retarded and suicidal because the distance was too great.

Columbus was totally fucking wrong; the mainstream calculations of the Earth's size were nearly exactly correct. However nobody had realized there was an entire western continent in between Europe and China, so Columbus went down in history as a visionary.
>>
>>3189829
So i told Columbus to sail around the world

He actually did it the absolute madman

Columbus also died before anyone managed to conclusively prove that America wasn't Japan, so he spent the rest of his life smug as fuck about being right where mainstream academia was wrong.

>>
>>3190005
The roman empire existed way into the medieval period. Just because someone decides to start calling them Byzantines way after the fall of Constantinopolis doesn't mean that the past changes.

I know that you're refering to the WRE when you're saying the Roman Empire but that's quite frankly stupid to do as the ERE were the richer, more stable and the more powerful of the two dual-empires in which the 'supreme' capital city was located. The only thing WRE had going for it in the sense of civil supremity is that it contained the actual city of Rome. However Rome became pretty much irrelevant after around 200 ad.

Compared to any country the UK is a third world shithole.
>>

Dunno if you're joking or not but I did the same thing. I thought it was named the same way as Weimar Germany, but the new fovernment started in the town of Nazi. While the party named themselves after that town.

These. The UK is easily the shittiest West European countries and definitely shittier than even some Eastern European ones (Czech republic, Slovenia). To compare it to USA is just laughable.

>Hansakompaniet heter så för att det ligger där Hansas gamle kontor i Malmö brukade ligga.
I think that I just got this explanation confused in my little child brain. Something along the lines of "Hansa was here but aren't any longer" turned into "Hansa used to run the place but now they let other people use their facilities/brand" in my head.

It's more of a /k/ thing, but I thought that swords were more valuable on the battlefield than spears.

Blame Hollywood for that. Also

But is wasn't a counterattack ?
>>
>>3192757
They were though, don't be a retard. People ran around with sidearms for a reason.
>>
>>3193521
No, it wasn't a counter attack in the sense that the word is used today. It was more a counter-culture and age old blood feud in which Christian nations were fed up with Arab and Turkish armies constantly attacking, pushing further into Europe after these same Muslim armies had already sacked and converted much of the holy lands in previous centuries. So once they had the power they would march south en masse and slam into the holy land as often and as viciously as they could to create the crusader states in the Levant and Palestine.

The crusades were in no way a rapid counterattack like Stalin ordering wave after wave of loosely coordinated Soviet attacks against the wermacht to weaken them and slow their momentum as they moved on stalingrad during operation blau.

at the same time I was trying to memorize a general timeline of major events. I was trying to give each century a very general description, as an index or book chapters of the events I remember.
the result was that every event I remembered is off by one century and they are mixed up with the general descriptions of the centuries.

I still remember two examples
>in 14XX Colombus discovered the New World -><- The 15th century is the age of discovery.
>The 16th century is the age of religious war -> Seven Years War happened in 16XX

Until 2 years ago I didn't knew that Crusades were an answer to Muslim aggression.

As in they never stated anything about what led up to them.

I was completely unaware of it, not once mentioned in school.

Did people actually get to learn about the byzantines and holy roman empire in school?

>>

Only the odd mention. We learned about Charlemagne being tricked into becoming the Holy Roman Emperor by a crafty pope which made the byzantines butthurt.
We were also told to use the fall of Constantinople as a rough bookmark for when the middle ages turned into the renaissance.
That's about it IIRC.
t. Swede.
>>
>>3195959
Oh and we learned the basics of Constantine the Great aswell.
>>
>>3194200
Nope. They simply called them Germany and Greece when they were brought up. I guess because they thought it would be too difficult for small children to understand.

I think they once or twice might have called the German Emperor the German-Roman Emperor though. Which in hindsight only confuses me even more.
>>
>>3196014
IIRC the swedish name for HRE - Tysk-romerska riket (German-Roman Realm) made me think that it actually was a remnant of the WRE who fled into germania when I first heard about it in school.

Who built the Pyramids if it wasn't slaves?

Also, I've seen Bonaparte's clothing in a Muesum in Berlin. He is surely a very petite man, at least by today's standards, as was Frederic the Great. How tall was he?
>>

>>
>>3194200
As far as I remember, HRE was referred to as Germany, which was confusing to me at the time because the Teutonic Order/Prussia were also Germans. As for the Byzantine, we only mentioned them when talking about Russians, and later Turks.
