Is it true before the 1800s no one viewed blacks as a different species?
Just saying, if I was a religious invader in 900AD, or whatever, and I encountered blacks for the first time, I would probably not consider them to be in the image of God. I always wonder how those dudes reacted to them at the time.

Nah, Egyptian and Greek missionaries definitely considered subsaharan Nubians and Ethiopians to be fully human and converted them. And the Portuguese did too.

Depends on who you ask. Most societies were ethnocentric though, even calling people of their own races subhumans. But if said people were integrated, or in europes case converted to Christianity. No one cared.
