I just read Homage to Catalonia by Orwell. My great-grandfather was conscripted in the Republican army and as most of my family fought for the Republic, despite not being commies and being very Catholic. The Communists, who had very little support before Franco's coup d'etat (check the 1936 general elections) got to power thanks to the treason commited by the French and the British. The bad guys won but no one knows if Spain would have been much better off if the Commies had won. The country has not really left behind its wounds from the war. (Spain is the second country with most missing people after Cambodia). Well, I'm a Catalan independentist, that might just prove how the country has never really healed. By the way, the Catalan government recently released a list of people punished by the Francoist regime during and after the war in Catalonia,to symbolically "invalidate" them. Several people in my family were in the list, among them one of my great-grandfathers, who was a civil guard and was sentenced to 12 years in prinson for not joining the military revolt and staying loyal to the republic. He was pardoned, I don't know why.
