So how come the same costly wars, including a very costly Polish invasion in 1605-1618, allowed Russia to become a great power? How come the rest of Europe was fighting very costly wars only to become greater and greater? You can't just blame Russia on Polish decline, the root is obviously in the retarded political system - while the rest of Europe grew more and more centralized in the 16-18th centuries, Poland failed to so.
