Compare Sparta, Golden Age Islam, Song China, modern Japan, Pagan Germanic tribes. All have women in close contact with men regularly and all have less occurrence of homosexual behavior than the other societies.

The notion that who you fuck as an identity is a modern one, a by-product of the advent of formalized psychology. Everything had to be categorized and everyone had to be sorted into groups.

Most societies throughout history that engaged in pederasty and homosexuality care only about who was doing the fucking. As in, a man can fuck anybody he wants and that's fine. You just can't GET fucked or you've given up your masculinity and your dignity as a citizen/member of society.

So naturally being chauvinistic led some to conclude that sex between men was inherently superior (since women weren't really people in the full sense of the word) and they began to develop practices with that in mind. A young male was already of inferior status and standing and was not expected to behave as a full adult would; you could fuck him without his losing status. Then once he became an adult, it was expected to stop and for him to get married and have kids and act how a man should. If he wanted to fuck some dudes on the side he could, as long as he was the one doing the penetrating.

This was the greco-roman attitude, anyway. The Japanese will have had their own ethic but the root philosophy is probably the same.
