Because they had modern military equipment and used the terrain to their advantage. The early clashes between the British and the Boers were something a prelude to WW1, with the Boers digging in around important river crossings and slaughtering thousands of British regulars charged with taking their positions.

It didn't take long however for the Boers to collapse as a organized force, unable to stand against the superior numbers, training and material of the British professional forces and disperse into small raiding groups. They were at a supreme disadvantage in artillery, losing most of what little they had in the early stages of the war at the few pitched encounters they took, which had a big effect on the positions they could even consider defending later on.

I'm actually reading a book about the Boer wars

After the first, which the Boers won, they recieved a tonne of support from major European powers such as Germany, Russia and France. The Boers held several diplomatic missions towards these countries in an attempt to gain a globally recognized and defended neutrality, like Belgium had.

Whenever a country considered voting in favour of it at the next Hague/Geneva conference however, the British would start boasting about their navy and threatning to cut off the other nation's trade routes.

All in all: Eternal Anglo just being the eternal anglo.

From what I've read, something happened in which the Commanding Officers on the British side had went and fucked everything up. General Redvers Buller had lead a march up the mountain of Spion Kop at night to mount a surprise attack the following morning. Little did the British know they had not made their encampment at the peak but in a narrow gulley in between the peak and another high point. Naturally the Boers had a field day with the trapped British troops and Buller resigned immediately after that collosal fuck up.
