It takes four days for General Matsui to arrive back on the front; upon which he issues a directive to cease violence. the IJA, seething, returns Asaka back to Japan, promotes him to General and gives him no further postings.

It is Matsui, not Asaka, who is convicted in 1948 and hung. Asaka, while forced to give up his Princely title, lives to age 93 and plays golf near Atami, a seaside beach-city. He loved golf so much he even designed a course for the Dai-Hikone country club in Kanagawa Prefecture.

Honestly, its just maintaining some minimal standard of what isn't permissible. Conventions don't exist to really stop the crimes, they're there for the post war tally of transgressions that comes due. Without standing conventions of what actually was a war crime the Allies could have just done what they wished to the defeated Axis, with no guidelines or rules whatsoever to whatever reprisals they wanted or who was subject to them.
