Actually, it's the contrary. Western powers doubted the USSR was military capable of doing anything against Germany. Stalin was disgusted about what happened in czechoslovakia, he understood very well that the USSR would be next at some point. But talks for an alliance failed (because of Poland, but not only)

So Stalin thought to let Germany fight against France, expecting the Germans, like in WW1 to lose many men in the process. He was wrong and his plan backfired. In the end the USSR faced Germany alone.
