This is criticism of the Jewish self-aggrandizement in their "scripture." The Jews definitely aren't gods but there are mortals who are gods which is one of the main conflicts between the gods and the Jews - though somewhat minor compared to their terrorism, murder, plunder, genocide, and iconoclasm.

Funny enough so quotes from Thomas are considered to pre-date the other Gospels and these quotes appear in those gospels but the words have been changed to be less mystical.

There was also a huge revitilzation of that type of thinking during the Reinnsance. All of the major thinkers followed it. The so called "Heresy of the Free Spirit"

Now here's the reason it got shut down. If people are directly connected to the divine force than the priests are out of a job. Even worst the holy book loses it's privilaged status as the exclusive word of God. In other words it made people too self-reliant.

Just reading up about it on Wikipedia, it appears they had some similar thoughts, and perhaps even had direct experience of the divine.

It has to do with our spirits being separate from our flesh. Our spirits actually belong to God as it is derived from him.

That isn't taking the Bible literally, that is taking single sentences out of context and then applying your own context to them. The only thing there that sounds like it's calling people mini-gods is "Has it not been said, you are God's?" And that is from a criticism of Jews with too much pride.

It is not an uncommon theory that the aphorisms predate the other gospels and the later ones were tacked on afterwords. The main reason is that when texts evolve the phrases and sentences tend to get more complicated. So while Thomas and the other Gopsels both share very similiar wordings at times, Thomas's wording is less elborate.

It's commonly thought that the 3 synoptic Gospels all share a common source which is imagined as a list of aphorisms. This is exactly what Thomas is.

Dating Thomas accuratly is pretty much impossible, it's all going to be guess work. The main reason is that Thomas has almost no mention of historical events to be contextualized.
