Mondale, the Democratic Party's candidate, was a poor candidate who ran on a liberal platform even though the country was not interested in it. His VP was also forced upon him and voters saw it as such, a token nomination of the first female VP. Aiken to Palin with McCain, such a gesture was made to offset the charisma and growing popularity of Reagan. However, any momentum that Ferraro may have gained Mondale was swept away as the media kept piling on controversies about her husband. By the election, the recession of the early 80's was subsiding and economy was growing pretty damn fast. Unemployment was plummeting, and labor force participation was increasing steadily. He also had some leftover sympathy from getting shot.

Overall, I'd say Reagan's popularity across the country had to do with his charisma and a robustly recovering economy. Mondale didn't campaign on anything big that would've swayed a large group of voters content with Reagan into his camp. I don't think any Democrats could have won this election.

This is actually true, but do you really think that people actually cared when he went on television and told them what they wanted to hear? Ronald Reagan was the evangelical Christian candidate that out-evangelized actual Christians because they don't care about who you actually are, they only want you talk about Jesus some more. Do that and you're gold with them, even if you run on a platform that would be the opposite of the one that Jesus would actually support.
