Not all cultures possess the western obsession with realism/naturalism. Even westeners themselves have rejected it during some periods.

Is this why one of the first depictions of Aladdin looks chinese and people constantly argue over the setting of it being in china even though it's persian?

Abbas didn't look chinese. Look at this portrait made in european (italian) realist style. What you call chink features were a convention of the persian art-style of the era that was indeed influenced by China and Central Asia.
>Is this why one of the first depictions of Aladdin looks chinese and people constantly argue over the setting of it being in china even though it's persian?
No, the story specifically says that Aladdin is from China. Like most folk stories of the time, it proceeds to completely ignore the culture of the place (since it's just used as in "far, far away") and instead uses the culture of the story-teller and the listeners.

The Turkics and the Mongols brought Chinese-influence in painting with them to Persia.
Largely because painting- as the Central Asians knew it- is heavily influenced by Chinkdom

Here is another example. To the left you have an italian portrait of Shah Ismail. To the right you have a miniature of the same Ismail (pointed by the red arrow) defeating the Shirvanshah. They're both roughly from the same era as Ismail. Our sources describe the shah as fair, so it's clear that the artist to right the was unable or more likely unwilling to represent him as he actually looked. His priority was to make a persian miniature following the traditional conventions.

Finally here we have a depiction of the evil Zahhak (snakes on his shoulders) being imprisoned and nailed to Mount Damavand as it's described in the Shahnameh. Notice how he, like the others, has east or central asian features. Despite this, in the Shahnameh Zahhak is an arab.
