The troops trapped at the beaches of Dunkirk were allowed to escape due to Hitler ordering a halt on the advance against the wishes of his generals.

The Wehrmacht was fully capable of destroying the troops trapped at Dunkirk; however, an anticipation of armistice/ceasefire/treaty, remorse and/or strategic blunder can all be associated with Hitlers decision to halt the advance on Dunkirk.

One think is certain, they were allowed to escape and the Wehrmacht could have destroyed or captured them.

The first of many mistakes Hitler would make during that war against the wishes of his generals.

Wrong
Hitler ordered a halt of a few days some weeks before the evacuation because supplies lines were overextended
As soon as they were good enough, offensive resumed in full force, and only a gallant rearguard action by French troops allowed Brits to escape before the Germans could reach them

>The troops trapped at the beaches of Dunkirk were allowed to escape due to Hitler ordering a halt on the advance against the wishes of his generals.
Wrong. Kleist and Rundstedt issued the halt order, and Hitler backed it up. Their reasoning was very much military in nature, and viewing that the proper placement of limited available reinforcements and supplies was pursuing the retreating French forces and not squeezing a pocket.

>The Wehrmacht was fully capable of destroying the troops trapped at Dunkirk;
Then why didn't they between May 27th and June 4th?

The halt was because the generals (who fought in world war one) feared a counter attack similar to the 1st battle of the marne (which led to a war of attrition) in world war one so they waited for supplies to catch up before fighting the reatguarding French which cumulatively allowed the British and French troops to escape.
>spares BEF for peace treaty
>continues to bomb them whilst waiting for treaty
Nigga wut?

>Luftwaffe continues to bomb the retreating BEF and French and sinking ships including the SS Paris, a clearly marked hospital ship

What did he mean by this?

Why didn't Hitler just shoot artillery at them for days? He was well within range with 200 - 300 heavy and medium guns attached to the army groups. Each division had an artillery regiment.

The Wehrmacht and their supply lines on the eastern front proved that they were fully capable of closing that pocket at Dunkirk, Hienz Guderian and other generals pushed for a continuation of the offensive due to having the initiative, but the high command hesitated.

It was a true strategic blunder and to think that the Wehrmacht was not capable of closing that pocket is absurd, they would prove that they were capable in many battles on the eastern front.

Thats a good question. Hitler made many strategic blunders, but halting the advance while having the initiative was one of the first ones he made during that war.

To bad their didnt have that hindsight in 1940 then
You have to remember that the Germans werent very confident about their invasion of France, and were very suprised by how successful it turned out to be
>>

That is so true, if only they had the confidence to fully execute their plans. That halt on the advance though....strategic blunder that potentially saved Britain.

Its interesting how that insecurity would evolve into an inflated ego and a full blown underestimation of the Soviet Union's man power and industrial potential.

That doesn't even make sense. What the ever loving fuck are you talking about?

>, Hienz Guderian and other generals pushed for a continuation of the offensive
They did fucking continue the offensive. There was more to the front than dunkirk you retard.

>was a true strategic blunder and to think that the Wehrmacht was not capable of closing that pocket is absurd,
Can you not read, or are you just retarded in general?

>they would prove that they were capable in many battles on the eastern front.
Just retarded it is. Clearly, we should be taking performance in other theaters with different equipments, relative doctrines, and numbers to evaluate Dunkirk. With that in mind, given how badly the British and French showed themselves capable of crushing the Germans in 1945, why didn't they take to the offensive and conquer Germany? Truly it is a mystery for the ages.

Well, France was seen as the most powerful country of the world back then
Despite what current English-speaking world propaganda tries to make people believe by massively overrating Brits, France was Germany's main enemy in WW1, the strongest Entente nation
Seeing they had defeated it so easily in 1940, Germans suddenly thought they were tough shit and could defeat about anyone
