Well, maybe not THE most reliable weapon of the war, but certainly not as bad as the memes say. It was a crude but very effective weapon. The bad reputation and jamming myths comes from the American re-chambered version, but it was rarely used in combat. The Germans spent the entire war developing the MP 18 and even when it was done, very few reached the frontlines. But the French grabbed a easy to make, pre-war design and were able to quickly make thousands of them and ship them to the front. And a gun like that, mobile and fully automatic was an huge advantage. Though, admittedly the skeleton magazine was a design flaw for trench combat.

It's not like the irish did a very good job

>O'Neill controlled the ridge, and intended to fight for it, with support from Aguila, O'Donnell, and Tyrell on multiple sides. Del Águila, the Spanish commander, was an experienced soldier and put up a fierce defense. His instructions were, however, to hold the town until the Irish army came down from Ulster to combine with them. When neither of his allies showed signs of movement, O'Neill ordered a retreat into the marshes, hoping to mire the English cavalry in the soft land. In the end, the Irish were overpowered by the English cavalry, who charged through O'Neill's men, and prevented a flanking maneuver by O'Donnell.

>The tactics showed that the Irish infantry were poorly trained for pitched battle in formation against a well drilled professional army. It also showed up the English cavalry techniques using the lance, as compared with the Irish method of no stirrup and overhead spear throwing.

>The Irish army left the field in some disorder while the supporting Spanish army led by Ocampo tried to hold up the English charge and the ensuing massacre of the Irish. Most of the Irish fled back to Ulster, though a few remained to continue the war with O’Sullolivan Beare and Dermot Maol MacCarthy Reagh.

"thermopylae was justified, xerxes did nothing wrong"
>>
>>3142799
Because regardless of your thoughts on Collins and his crew, the one thing Ireland absolutely could not do was withstand a full-scale conflict with The British.

The literal only justification of the anti-treaty people was "guys we're so so close to literally brits out so giving up now would be stupid!!!!" despite the fact that a continued conflict would not only likely undo all their efforts but leave the nation in utter tatters.

The fact that Collins and his full crew would have been an incredible set of statesmen is entirely besides the point, anti-treaty people were utterly and absolutely deluded.

The "they almost won" thing is less down to Irish soldiers being great (at only a few very select moments in history has Ireland ever stopped being assfucked by invaders long enough to have competent fighters) but moreso about the fact that they almost broke England.

O'Neill could never really mount an offensive on England, but could only drain them through the conflict in Ireland. That he did; England was brought so close to complete and utter bankruptcy by the war that O'Neill and the others were offered full pardons and got to keep their lands.

It's one of those wars where had things gone even just a little bit differently that the affects could have been huge.

>the matter gets raised at ecumenical council of Constance
>Polish side argues that launching 'crusades' against Catholic kingdoms makes no sense plus the Teutonic knights are killing populations which are already in the process peacefully converting
>Teutonic Order (John of Falkenberg in particular) side argues that the Lithuanian conversion was insincere, slaughtering peaceful infidels for being infidels is perfectly okay, the Polish king is a mad dog, and "The Poles deserve death for defending infidels, and should be exterminated even more than the infidels; they should be deprived of their sovereignty and reduced to slavery."

>the first one

>The new state borders had cut Galicia off from many of its traditional trade routes and markets of the Polish sphere, resulting in stagnation of economic life and decline of Galician towns. Lviv lost its status as a significant trade center. After a short period of limited investments, the Austrian government started the fiscal exploitation of Galicia and drained the region of manpower through conscription to imperial army. The Austrians decided that Galicia should not develop industrially but remain an agricultural area that would serve as a supplier of food products and raw materials to other Habsburg provinces. New taxes were instituted, investments were discouraged, and cities and towns were neglected
>As a result of Galician poverty, Galician peasants were too malnourished to work properly, and had little immunity to diseases such as cholera, typhus, smallpox and syphilis.[3] Stauter-Halsted describes a vicious circle in which Galician peasants worked "lethargically because [they were] inadequately nourished and [not living] better because [they] work too little."[3] Frank quotes Szepanowski: "every resident of Galicia does one-quarter of a man's work and eats one-half of a man's food."[6] The near constant famines in Galicia, resulting in 50,000 deaths a year, have been described as endemic.

Former partition victim here. The first one is true. Austria in 1840s did some heinous Russia-tier shit but Austria-Hungary was chill.

Nah, the ideal progression, if you're basing it off the original Wehraboo one, goes

>First one: Wrong, but something widely believed.
>Second one: ridiculous and unprovable, more an assertion of values than a claim of fact
>Third one: Now objectively wrong with statements of values overlaid upon it,
>Fourth one: Blatantly ridiculous, nobody could possibly believe this unless you're drinking serious cool-aid.

I would do something like

>Hannibal was about to win the 2nd Punic War, if he followed up on Cannae
>Rome's rise to power was a disaster for the Mediterranean world, Carthage would be a better pick.
>Hanno sabotaged the battle of Dertosa so he could send the reinforcements to Spain and not Italy.
>Child sacrifice was a necessary part of a viable culture.

(Pardon, I know they're heavily slanted towards the Hannibal war; I don't know much Carthaginian history, only really military history.)

>>
>>3150627
>>3150649
The thing is all the natural trade routes from that area go up north, mostly via the Vistula. To the south there are the Carpathians and in general hard land to travel or conduct trade over. There was pretty much only one trade route (dating back to the middle ages) going by land from Krakow through Moravia to Bohemia. The Austrians connected that with their road system in the Duchy of Teschen and that was the end of it until the 1850s-1860s when railways appeared.

So via the partition land grab Austria ended up with a province on the other side of mountains which was now disconnected from essential infrastructure.

Shame that by the time there was an idea for a triple kingdom together with Ruthenia everybody was too angry at each other. In the 20th century Piłsudski had an idea for a federal Intermarium state. It never took off (until now I guess) but he still allied himself with different countries in the region against the Bolsheviks. So there's that at least. Maybe that's why no one ever mentions Belarus in this context. It was one of the countries that didn't make it. Just like Ukraine.

Definitely a comment from one noble who said that Cossacks are like nails and need to be trimmed down from time to time. Shit like this made the Polish-Lithuanian-Ruthenian Commonwealth more distant. Of course because of (voluntary) Polonization of Lithuanian and Ruthenian elite it's not always clear when one nationality begins or ends so sometimes they were oppressing their own people.

Great. The third one needs a small correction. It should be "because the nobles were worthless" or "the monarch was worthless" so it would make sense.
In reality it was because he didn't want his boy to change the religion so it's not too far off.
