Skepticism is good, paranoia that everyone wants your head on a platter isn't healthy. Especially for a leader of a country with so many checks and balances
War on drugs is great if you stop people from doing drugs, but not when smuggle coke into the country for people to sell so you can arrest them.

Should you not be able to vote if you can't read? I mean even if you can't read you'd be able to recognise the name

Read Dallek's book 'Nixon and Kissinger: Partners in Power'. Nixon was deeply insecure, and sought political success as a means of sustaining a self. His experiences with Watergate directly affected US foreign policy, with one example being the US' involvement in the 1973 October War. He felt a diplomatic victory would improve his domestic image. However of course this wasn't the main reason to support Israel, the main reason was to push the Soviets out of M.E., as well as increase American influence. However him and Kissinger did not correctly perceive the Saudi oil threat and the embargo followed.
So yeah, by the end, his insecurity and paranoia was damaging to the course of US foreign policy.
