West Africa was highly cultivated by the Middle Ages and the megafauna were on their way out by the 16th century. The great herds of East Africa were almost exterminated by hunting in the 19th century and only survived due to the cattle plague, reducing incentive for the natives to kill grazing competition and predators.

Wildlife co-evolved with humans for millions of years countering every little advancement humans made on the evolutionary "ladder"
When humans began spreading to other contininents the animals hadn't evolved to survive talking, spear throwing fire wielding naked apes.
