Ukrainian cossacks were Ukrainians, could you possibly believe that? It's not an ethnic term, it's just referred to different people settling at a frontier, and Ukraine had a large one back in the day.

Ukrainian People's Republic was a Ukrainian state made by Ukrainian peoples using the right for self-determination, as the name suggests, then it got reconquered by Russians who established a Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, ostensibly a sovereign state but barely an autonomy de facto.

Territorial approach, more modern book. Don't read other works by Magocsi, though, he's a part of Carpatho-Ruthenian nutjob crowd frankly.
