The Moro Insurgency in the Philippines started out as a Nationalist uprising between the Gubmint and the MNLF (Moro National Liberation Front), who did so under Nationalism. Justification being the Muslim Flips weren't part of the OG Spanish Philippines which is the basis for Filipinoness. It was a bog standard rebellion, where both sides even tried to uphold the Geneva Conventions.

Then in 1989, Flip government and Moro rebels got into talks which convinced the MNLF to stand down in exchange for Autonomy over Moroland. Half did surrender, but the other half went "Casuals!" and started the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, which this time, did contain Islamic Extremism.

However the MILF got beat in the late 90s and many surrendered. This lead to even more radical people- this time, affiliated with Al Qaeda- to yell "casuals!" at the MILF and started the Abu Sayyaf Group, and then they became a legit terrorist group.

Fast forward today, the MILF continues to suck government cock for political gain, the Abu Sayyaf got BTFO in 2000-2001, which balkanized to even more groups: Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF), and the family-run Maute Group. After Al Qaeda became lame and Osama was killed, and the rise of the ISIS in 2014, terrorists in Flipland dropped Al Qaeda and swore allegiance to ISIS, with claims that their current leader was assigned to be an "Emir" over the Muslim bits of the PHilippines.

So yeah, still Salafist/Wahhabi bullshit.
