Was the normandy the best place for an invasion?

No. For some reason they didnt just start the invasion in Berlin and just end the war in like 10 minutes haha lmao
>>
>>3118753
Jokes aside, can an anon explain why they didn't invade the German coast?
>>
>>3118788
They feared the german warrior
>>
>>3118788
And create a fuck huge salient? Great plan.
>>
>>3118788
Supply lines would have been stretched too far, and it's not like the atlantikwall did end at the german border.

The biggest tactical consideration is that it's really hard to bring heavy equipment along with you when you're storming a beach. Artillery was the biggest killer in both world wars, and in the normal course of a D-Day style invasion, you can't bring yours, but the defenders will have as many guns as they can pack into those defenses.

To compensate for that, somewhat, you want to saturate the invasion zone with tactical air support, and have interdictor bombers further back to prevent reinforcements from rushing to wherever you land. While the Americans and British between them have considerable air superiority over the Germans (overwhelmingly so by 1944), WW2 planes, especially those mono-engined fighters that you need to achieve air superiority, generally can't fly all that far. That in turn limits where you can realistically invade to the operational radius of your fighter craft.

That in turn means that for attacking northern Europe, you're pretty much limited to the northern coast of France somewhere, maybe into Belgium if you really want to push it. Normandy was selected because of relatively light defenses in the "invadaeble zone".

Because they had a map and half a brain?
>>
>>3118788
de Gaul prolly nagged their ear off
>>
>>3118838
So then why not start the invasion at Calais, the closest point from Britain?
>>
>>3118895
Because the Germans weren't complete idiots and had Calais far more heavily defended than Normandy was.

This isn't about what was going on during Overlord, but even afterwards it was significantly heavily defended http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/UN/Canada/CA/Victory/Victory-14.html

>>
They never landed there - it is a hoax like the bombing of Dresden or the thing with the jews ... all was a part of a nice motivation film project
>>
>>3118895
>doing the obvious

I've heard that when the landings at Normandy happened, Hitler refused to send armoured forces away from Calais cause he thought this was all a diversion
>>
>>3119745

This is because the British cunningly tricked Hitler into thinking they planned to invade from the south, even going so far as to dress a corpse in a uniform and have him wash ashore with "secret" invasion plans for the G*rms to find.
>>
>>3119798
the allies also had an enormous fake army still in britain with wooden planes and tanks, and they put Patton in charge of it (instead of having him participate in the invasion) to punish him for running his mouth

he was PISSED

No, that was Operation Mincemeat, which misled the Germans as to where the Sicily invasion was to take place.

There was a "ghost army" in the UK (under the nominal control of Patton, who was pissed off at being a decoy), which moved radio operators up and down England, to make the German listeners assume that Pas de Calais was going to be the main thrust.

Photo related, it's "Major Martin" of the Royal Marines (actually a homeless Welch man whose body was unclaimed, and so used in the deception).
