In the Mediterranean winters weren't that cold so they didn't have to wear that much winter clothes (Which is why Greeks and Romans didn't wear pants).
When the fuckers built their empire and learned that the Reine and Danube was ass-cold then they started wearing clothes more similar to the ones we have today.
