Personally, I find early republic era Rome (around the time of the Samnite wars) as the height of Roman civilization.
Manius Curius Dentatus was a true Roman and inspiration to us all.

The true fall of the Republic is when the people's tribunes kept getting castrated by the patrician consuls and straight up oligarchs like that bastard Sulla. Caesar did nothing wrong, and Augustus did the right thing.
In America now we face a similar problem; the oligarchical political parties trample on the needs of the masses, who lack effective representation, in favor of their own interests.
Think about it: the Senate is like the Roman Senate, the President and VP are like the Consuls, the House of Representatives are like the People's tribunes, political newcomers are novus homos, and welfare is akin to the grain dole.
Donald Trump is simply the prelude to Sulla, only there won't be proscriptions because it's easier to take down enemies by planting shit on their computers. History repeats itself because humans don't fundamentally change; we might not kill political opponents, but we still ruin them to the point they might as well be dead.
