Much more complex than that. It doesn't even make a huge difference where the phenotype originated just that it was favored by selection.

No, its a inland lake. The problem is that it could be Ukraina, or any of the counties bordering the fucking Sea of Azov or Black Sea.
So Ukraine, Crimea, North Caucasus, Georgia. Modern state borders has no bearing on how the area was used, except if the state border is along some natural obstacle(river, frontier, harsh landscape, mountain)
