As for changing history, well the truth is that such an event happening in any civilized part of the world would have massive and unpredictable repercussions because people would study what had happened and it would have who knows what sort of impact on the development of science.

It would be unfortunate but I don't think much would change. Could probably be believed to be German espionage so it would probably shape the US's decision on the League of Nations and the Treaty of Versailles. That goes for any populated location of the US during WW1 though.
