Why did the Japanese manage to industrialize by themselves while other Asians lagged behind? Was it because of their unique culture and hard-working mentality?

They united under a strong central government which then mandated a complete modernization project.
Other asian country that's similar to Japan is Korea. But korea has always been subservient to China. Whatever politics China takes, Korea follows or is just around.
If you meant China, then China is a completely different beast. China was ~15x larger than Japan at the time. China's population was ~450 M in 1850. Japan is around 30M.
On the pure logistic scale, it would take much longer to implement modernization process in China. They did implement modernization process, but it was "slow" relatively speaking mainly because they already had a working system in place. Meanwhile Japan's system wasn't quite robust and can easily add to the system by modernizing.

Welp, OP here. Forgot to include Karafuto and Chishima Islands. Tsushima and Takeshima too.

Should have also included that Chousen colony and Machukuo protectorate.

Strong political will to modernize, central government, lack of resources that Europeans coveted (and thus no reason for Europeans to subjugate them, delaying progress) and they were fairly lucky to 'buddy up' with USA out of all the western powers, since the US was relatively benevolent and not interested in subjugation
By playing European powers against each other. Same with Thailand, though they were under greater pressure, and so didn't get a chance to industrialize.

Japan was on much better terms with France and especially Britain than US. US was their main if not only rival in Pacific throughout the first half of 20 century.
