They used log rollers to move the moai stones about, eventually they cut down all the trees. Then the Moai culture ended and they started fighting among themselves more.
The Moai actually have full bodies but we are used to seeing them as just a torso or even a head, thats because land erosion is so bad that the earth shifts incredibly fast due to lack of trees which would have held the earth in place.
