Catholics being superstitious idol worshiping pagans, they believed that if they could drink from the same cup Jesus drank from they would rocket straight into heaven. There was a similar phenomenon with many other relics, the grail was one of the most prestigious and highly sought after.

The Grail in Arthurian legend is more or a symbol for a life goal that most will likely not obtain. Many knights go off to search for it, but get lost or distracted during their quest and don't find it. The few who do are determined and pure enough to continue the quest. Or at least that's my interpretation.
