Nothing, it’s just a plot device in fantasy novel written in the middle ages.

Kind of like the One Ring in Lord of The Rings.

The Bavarian version the Grail is actually a mug. The doctrine was taught by early Sumerian and Babylonian settlers in South Germany, which are known by such surnames as Schwartz, Schwartzkopf, etc. By drinking the mystic beer the initiate was able to unite with Enki, Marduk, and all the gods.

The Grail in Arthurian legend is more or a symbol for a life goal that most will likely not obtain. Many knights go off to search for it, but get lost or distracted during their quest and don't find it. The few who do are determined and pure enough to continue the quest. Or at least that's my interpretation.
