It was nothing but a rump state throughout its entire existence but modern day Greek diaspora and orthodox Christians, just LARPers really, treat as the greatest thing of all time and take every opportunity possible to bitch and moan about it.
>>3081173
>the empire was divided in two, with the western half having its capital in Ravenna
>the western half collapsed, leaving the eastern half the successor/continuation of Rome
>brainlets still struggle with this concept
Lmao
>>3081057
Eastern Greek vassal state of Ottoman Empire
more like Eastern Hellenic Despotate
>>3081180
The Byzantines were nothing but a fucking rump state after Justinian with a few periods of minor resurgence. It's nothing to be proud about.
>>3081057

So, they weren't LARPers, then otherwise the Roman Empire post Trajan was a rump state too, as it had immediately abandoned Armenia and Mesopotamia.

Any empire that survives a thousand years while being surrounded on all sides by hostile states is something to be proud of IMO.

there is no Red Pill to take on the Byzantines
other than the fact that:
>the Byzantine Empire is just a name given by scholars in today's academia.
>They are called an Empire even though for most of the middles ages they werent. more like a bunch of states consisting of vasseldom that "pledged" their allegiance.
the name Empire sticks well up until the 10th century or so. The Empire of the Eastern Romans saw its height in the 7th century when they controlled the entire Med and reclaimed much of the land lost by the WRE prior to its fall in the 5th century. The Byzantines also had control over some area in the Italian Peninsula up until the 12th century.
Actually a similar anecdote can be recognized when comparing the HRE to the ERE. Where the Holy Roman Empire was none of those things by the 15th century, the ERE or Byzantine Empire was certainly no longer Eastern, Nor Roman, Or an Empire by the time of its fall.
United States is a continuation of the Norman empire
Prove me wrong

hes right actually.
the storming of Normandy in WW2 on DDay by the American and allied forces was the reclaiming of the motherland to unify all of the United states of American Normandy's Empire
