It triggers me so much when they say "Greece, the birthplace of Western Civilization" in history documentaries.

Western Civilization started during renaissance Western Europe. Fully formulated in revolutionary France.

Ancient Greeks literally had nothing to do with Western Europe. It was the Arabs that kept Greek ideas alive, not plebian medieval era Western Europeans.

>Western Civilization started during renaissance Western Europe
Does that mean Rome also not part of western civilisation?

>Renaissance literally means rebirth, referring to Greek philosophy and ideas
>The Renaissance started when Greeks fled the dying Byzantine empire for the west

It was not. There was a clear disconnect during the medical Era.

Rome and Greece was forgotten until renaissance people started translating Arabs texts and started to idealize and fantasize Rome and Greece as Muh Heritage. Started building shitty neoclassical buildings and shit.

Byzantine Greece was nothing like Classical Greece you fucktard.

Even classical ideas of democracy didn't exist. Byzantine was a dictatorship.

>Byzantine Greece was nothing like Classical Greece you fucktard
No fucking shit you dumbass cock gobbler, it's a fucking 1000+ year difference. It is however still a continuation the Roman Empire which means it kept the knowledge.
>Even classical ideas of democracy didn't exist. Byzantine was a dictatorship.

Rome is the birthplace of Western Civilization. I do not agree with you saying Rome is not in continuity with the West, since there are way too many cultural traditions being passed from then.

Ancient Greece literally affected the whole world. There are even Hellenic influences in Mahayana Buddhism. Greece is, thus, not exclusively Western. One cay say it heavily influenced the West, but it did influence Mid East and other parts of the world too.

>Greece is, thus, not exclusively Western
Same as Romans
>>

>Rome and Greece was forgotten until renaissance people started translating Arabs texts
Objectively wrong.

But you are correct about Greece/Rome not being the beginning of western civilization, since they're only a piece of it. Western Civilization is a synthesis of Greco-Roman, Abrahamic, and Germanic cultures. So it can not be truly said to have begun until all three of those elements came together sometime during the Middle Ages and were refined over the course of the Early Modern Period.
>>

you use modern terminology for everything because you have no knowledge of history prior to late 18th century outside of youtube amateurs and history channel

>It was the Arabs that kept Greek ideas alive, not plebian medieval era Western Europeans.
>implying that the early and middle middle ages weren't defined by rigid adherence Aristotelean and Platonic thought
>implying the high/late middle ages didn't make objective improvements upon Greek thought
>implying early early modern period Humanist plebs didn't dogmatically return to the fallacious classical arguments while ignoring every single advancement made by medieval scholars
