During WW2 France got kicked out of her colonies in indochina by Japan, and at the end of the war Vietnam declared independence. France tried to come back and reconquer it, which lead Ho Chi Minh to approach the US for support. This was refused since Truman didn't want to piss off France, a NATO member, despite their actions obviously being in violation of the San Francisco charter. So they went to the Soviets for help instead and BTFO the French who then left NATO anyway.
