Well, the society of the Frankish empire was a lucky mixture, the ruling class was of Germanic origin and took over power during the migration age. The local Gallo-Roman population was largely serfs and peasants, but their Germanic overlords where wise enough to conserve the administration and science left over by the Romans and adopt , at least superficially their Christian faith.
This resulted in a highly cultured society that should rule Europe for the next 1000 years to come, the Holy Roman Empire!
