I know they continued to exist is some sort of fashion up until Germany's defeat. But what exactly was their role in Nazi Germany after the SS wreaked their shit and took the SA's place as the Nazi party's para-military wing?

It turned into beer-drinking club for "old guard" NSDAP members who were growing increasingly old and fat. They LARPed as a some sort of territorial defense and were officially tasked with manning fortifications within Germany.
They were irrelevant but still quite famous and respectable, since SA remained an important part of Nazis' mythology.
