Why did Russia fall so far into irrelevance?

I mean, they are not the only european power that lost most of its empire. But UK, France, Germany, etc. are all still kind of relevant. Russia though is not even Top 10 in the biggest economies and are not putting out anything of value.

Or in other words, what did the West do better than Russia, that losing their empires didn't make them fall into complete irrelevance, like Russia is falling?

We try to be relevant via military presence
>>
The brain drain I think explains most of it, both as a cause of some of the economic decline and an effect of competition from Europe, the Anglosphere and Asian tigers as a location for lucrative services and high tech industries.

It is one of the goals of the state to prevent this but it conflicts with now deeply embedded corruption and inefficiency as well as a broken pessimistic alcoholic population.
>>

GDP is not the only thing that matters, according to this list the Netherlands are more "relevant" than Iran or Pakistan.
>>
>>3055197

Iran and Pakistan don't do anything.
>>
America wanted to completely destroy every aspect of Russia. We wanted to make their economy horrible, military shit, technological capabilities shit, living standards shit, everything shit. They pissed off the strongest superpower in history, by pointing a nuke at them for 80 years, so they went overkill with how they treated them.

No other country besides maybe the Khwarazmian Empire has had to face the wrath of a true superpower like Russia did.

Pakistan has nukes brudda

Netherlands could have nukes, they choose not to.

Russia has no favors going for it when it comes to globalized trade except for oil and natural gas, and that's only because it's the only reliable way for Western Europe to receive energy.

The West has made a conscious effort to isolate Russia as much as humanly possible in the economics game, to the point where they were barred from joining organizations like the WTO until just 4 or 5 years ago, and even then resistance was mounted to that effort.

The West and western allies control every major Russian shipping lane, from the Danish Strait, the Bosporus, and the Korean/Japan strait, so the export and import of Russian good by sea is completely at the mercy of the West, who can close or restrict Russian traffic through these chokepoints on a whim.

All that coupled with the West's refusal to make any trade agreements that are in any way beneficial to Russia outside of the energy sector kneecaps them into being a resource-based economy only, as it's the only economic asset they have to use as leverage with the West, and as a result sectors like manufacturing, service industries and technologies either get neglected or used solely for their themselves in their internal economy.

These economic and trade barriers have stifled Russia from competing in global markets, and the sanctions introduced in response to the Ukraine crisis only further alienated it from the global community.

Russia's only real remedy to this is to turn towards Asia, where trade deals with China and India, as well as the Eurasian Economic Union to keep central asian markets dominated by Russia are keeping them afloat, but even then that's not a long term solution that projects growth, it only keeps them from sinking any further.

tl;dr: Russia is at the complete mercy of Western Economies, who can perform punitive actions against Russia for even slightly stepping out of line politically like they did in Ukraine.
>>
>>3055211
Weren't their economy shit while they still were the USSR?
>>
>>3055323
USSR economy had short periods of insane growth and long periods of stagnation
>>
>>3055211
you have no clue what you're talking about. what happened in the soviet union in the 1990s was the responsibility of the russians. the EU and American role in russia is highly exaggerated
>>
>>3055264
>attacking and annexing part of another country
>slightly stepping out of line politically
>>
>>3055371
I'm not mitigating the magnitude of the Ukraine Crisis, annexing Crimea is by it's definition stepping out of line in the political landscape.

but the crisis itself was twofold because of the conflicting interests. The West wants Ukraine under its sphere of influence, in order to put NATO troops on Russia's border and exert further pressure on them, and Russia aimed to keep to keep Ukraine in its sphere of influence, pushing bask against western pressure with pressure of its own.

The Revolution was seen as the opportunity for the West to finally fulfill its ambition of making Ukraine a NATO member, and Russia responded with the annexation and the Donbass separatists, breaking the status quo where Ukraine was nonaligned in order to prevent such hostilities.

Both sides stepped out of line in order to break that decades long impasse, the West just had the economic might to punish Russia for denying NATO and the West of its ambitions by annexing Crimea and creating a frozen war in the Donbass.
>>
>>3055357
And a great dependence on it's oil like modern Russia.
>>
>>3055461
Nato doesn't care about Ukraine. It is the dream of most of our people to join Nato, but it is a one-way wish.
>>
>>3055951
The Ukraine is important because of its relation to Russia. It's both a major manufacturing nation and the region that let Imperial Russia produce 1/3 of the grain in Europe. Russia wants its assets under their belt, or at least their thumb, so that they can get back to being major powers again. NATO wants it because of its potential, its economic ties with Russia, and its key location in relation to Russian food and trade centers.
>>
>>3055114
>why

Why do people use this word when they don't know what they are talking about?
>>
Ideology systems unifies people together as well as providing a compelling narrative in which people limit their own self serving actions for the "greater good" The collapse of these narratives create devastating effects on their societies
>>
Communism. It doesn't work, it is deadly.
