Why did Europeans go crazy over cocoa from the New World when carob was already native and widely cultivated in the Mediterranean?

Chocolate is a bit tastier and has more kick, sure, but it shouldn't that impressive or worth the effort to get it from the tropics when you can grow carob in your garden.

The point is not to get it from the tropics, but to use the black man to grow it in the tropics. You can't use the slave in Europe.
