I think it has something to with Protestantism. In Countries that were majority Protestant especially those with a history of leftist governments religion seems to be declining to the point where in many regions Catholicism, Orthodoxy and Islam is overtaking Protestantism as the dominant faith. In Catholic and Orthodox countries religion doesn't seem to be declining as much. Compare the religious demographics of eastern Germany and the Czech Republic with Poland and Romania for example.
