>It took the unification of Poland and Lithuania to bring them down, an order of only a few hundred knights
That's BS.
1. The Polish-Lithuanian alliance was for one battle, one war at best. After Grunwald/Tannenberg Poland fought alone, Lithuania was even inclined to ally with the Teutons to balance Poland. Teutons were stronger than Poland only because Poland was in a state of perpetual civil war before mid 14th century.
2. The monk-knights themselves were the ruling elite. The bulk of the Teutonic army were secular knights, town and rural levies, armed peasants and scores of mercenaries.
