The longsword, it can be used in so many ways, it can be used as a thrusting weapon, a slashing weapon, and if you want to, you can use it as a hammer to put a good dent in someones armour.
It also doubles as a tool, you can serve butter with it as well!
So tell me, why is the typical longsword the best weapon of mankind?

Easier to wear, and the longsword simply wasn't a match for the rapier in unarmored fights.
If you're going to deal with the hassle of a long blade, you'd go with the rapier for that reason alone, at least by the time the longsword is falling out of fashion.
