They were both occupied after World War 1 or 2 respectively, but the Turks kicked out the occupiers, so Turkey actually has less of a claim to "having been colonized" than Japan does, unless they think Ataturk is an evil whitey keeping the brown man down.
Unless they're talking about the Roman/Byzantine Empire having control of Anatolia, but that wouldn't make much sense since Turkey did not exist back then, and in fact it was the Turks who took it out of Byzantine hands: i'e' it was part of a European country which was then colonized by non-Europeans.
